New York Islanders goaltender Jaroslav Halak was placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury Sunday, retroactive to Dec. 21.

Halak is 10-6-3 with a 2.09 goals-against average and .923 save percentage in 20 games.

The Islanders host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday in their first game out of the holiday break. Goalie Christopher Gibson was recalled from Bridgeport of the American Hockey League to back up starter Thomas Greiss.

Gibson, 23, is 11-5-3 with a 1.99 goals-against average, .928 save percentage and two shutouts in 22 games with the Sound Tigers this season. The Islanders acquired Gibson, a second-round pick (No. 49) of the Los Angeles Kings in the 2011 NHL Draft, in a six-player trade that sent forward Michael Grabner to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sept. 17, 2015.
