Sharks win 6th straight, beat Blue Jackets 5-3 behind 2 goals from Joe Pavelski

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Joe Pavelski scored twice and the San Jose Sharks rallied late for a 5-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets for their sixth straight victory on Sunday night.

San Jose won its seventh straight road game by completing a perfect six-game trip. Patrick Marleau had a goal and an assist, and Brent Burns and Brenden Dillon also scored. Joel Ward added two assists and Alex Stalock made 28 saves.

Ryan Johansen, Boone Jenner and Cam Atkinson scored for Columbus. Sergei Bobrovsky finished with 24 saves.

Columbus led 3-1 after Atkinson's goal 1:23 into the third, but the Sharks stormed back with help from several key offensive zone faceoff wins. They took the lead by scoring three times in a 7:02 span, including Dillon's go-ahead score with 6:45 left.

Pavelski started the rally at 6:13, with a long redirection between Bobrovksy's legs. Burns pulled San Jose even, one-timing a cross-ice feed from Ward at the left circle for his eighth and third in two games. Dillon's seeing-eye shot from the blue line made it past a screened Bobrovksy.

Pavelski scored his 12th into an empty net with 1:16 remaining.

Despite being road weary and having played on Saturday night in Pittsburgh, the Sharks had more than enough energy in the first period. They seemed to catch Columbus off guard with their speed, and they didn't shy away from the rough stuff, participating in two fights 4 seconds apart.

With San Jose buzzing around the Blue Jackets' cage during the period, Marleau scored a goal a night after becoming the 83rd NHL player to reach 1,000 points. In heavy congestion, he slipped home a rebound for his seventh with 3:33 left.

In the second period, Columbus carried the play, outshooting the Sharks 19-7 and putting them on their heels. They cashed in twice 1:18 apart to take the lead.

Johansen, down on the fourth line to start the period, hammered one home with a backhand whip of the stick for his fourth at 5:30. Jenner followed, finishing a pretty tic-tac-toe passing combination to make it 2-1 with his 11th. Brandon Saad carried the puck into the zone and on the left side hit William Karlsson, who quickly sent a cross-ice pass to Jenner, wide open at the right post.

Columbus continued to ride a wave of momentum, pinning the Sharks in but were unable to increase their lead in the period. Defenceman Jack Johnson, up on the play, clanked a shot off the post, and then the Blue Jackets had good chunks of 4-on-3 and 5-on-3 power-play time.

In the third, Atkinson snapped home a feed from Nick Foligno — aided by a friendly carom off the skate of Paul Martin — for his fifth. The goal withstood a video review goalie interference challenge by Sharks coach Peter DeBoer.
