Hurricanes defenseman Murphy out with concussion

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Ryan Murphy is sidelined with a concussion, coach Bill Peters said Sunday.

Murphy left Carolina's 3-2 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday in the second period after he was hit by Flyers forward Ryan White, who was penalized for boarding. Murphy played one shift before leaving with what was ruled an upper-body injury.

"He'll go through the protocol starting [Monday], and we'll just take it day-by-day," Peters told the Hurricanes website.

Murphy, the 12th pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, has four assists in 17 games this season.

The Hurricanes have no plans to recall a defenseman from Charlotte of the American Hockey League.

"Right now we're banged up in our organization on the back end," Peters said. "We're not going to call anybody up until we need to. We've got six capable bodies and we'll play them."
