WHL Roundup: Reid Duke nets winner as Wheat Kings beat Hurricanes

BRANDON, Man. - The Brandon Wheat Kings are back on track.

Reid Duke's short-handed goal in the third period was the winner as Brandon snapped a three-game skid with a 4-1 victory over the Lethbridge Hurriances on Saturday in Western Hockey League action.

Ivan Provorov tied the game at 1-1 for the Wheat Kings (12-6-2) in the second period. Tyler Coulter and Luke Harrison added empty-net goals as Brandon pushed past Lethbridge in the standings.

Egor Babenko scored a power-play goal to open the scoring for the Hurricanes (12-7-0).

Jordan Papirny turned away 28 shots for the win as Jayden Sittler kicked out 41-of-43 shots in defeat.

The Wheat Kings were scoreless on six power plays while Lethbridge was 1 for 4.

MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Reese Johnson and Grayson Pawlenchuk scored in the second period as Red Deer toppled the Warriors.

Colton Bobyk had a late power-play goal in the first while Adam Musil added an empty netter for the Rebels (15-7-0).

Noah Gregor opened the scoring with a power-play goal for Moose Jaw (11-6-3), which had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Red Deer's Presten Kopeck received a major penalty and game misconduct for kneeing at the 14 minute mark of the third period.

CALGARY — Jakob Stukel had a hat trick and added an assist as the Hitmen held on to beat Tri-City.

Radel Fazleev also found the back of the net for Calgary (11-10-1).

Michael Rasmussen had two goals and an assist for the Americans (7-12-1), with Kurtis Rutledge adding the other.

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. — Cole Sanford struck twice as the Tigers snapped a four-game skid by doubling up Kootenay.

Matt Bradley, Ryan Jevne, Mason Shaw and Chad Butcher supplied the rest of the offence for Medicine Hat (6-8-3).

Vince Loschiavo, Jared Legien and Matt Alfaro scored for the Ice (4-15-2).

Kootenay's Troy Murray was ejected at 19:07 of the first period after a major penalty for cross checking.

VANCOUVER — Keegan Iverson and Brett Clayton scored early in the second period as Portland got past the Giants.

Alex Overhardt, Rodrigo Abols and Alex Schoenborn rounded out the attack for the Winterhawks (10-9-0), who won their third in a row.

Brennan Menell, Matt Barberis and Ty Ronning found the back of the net for Vancouver (5-11-4).

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Jesse Gabrielle had two goals and an assist to lead the Cougars past Edmonton.

Brad Morrison added a goal and two assists for Prince George (10-7-1). Brogan O'Brien, Jared Bathune and Tate Olson also scored.

Dario Meyer responded in the third period for the Oil Kings (7-11-3).

SPOKANE, Wash. — Jason Fram scored the winner in overtime as the Chiefs ended Kelowna's five-game winning streak.

Dominic Zwerger had a pair of goals in regulation for Spokane (10-8-3) while Adam Helewka chipped in with a goal and two assists.

Gordie Ballhorn had a goal and two assists for the Rockets (14-5-1), who also got goals from Justin Kirkland and Calvin Thurkauf.

VICTORIA — Mathew Barzal and Keegan Kolesar both had a goal and an assist as Seattle beat the Royals for its third-straight win.

Nick Holowko added an insurance goal for the Thunderbirds (12-6-1).

Matthew Phillips had a power-play goal to open the scoring for Victoria (14-7-1).
