MacDonald scores winner, Silvertips halt Winterhawks' five-game win streak

PORTLAND, Ore. - Cole MacDonald scored the winner with 53 second remaining in regulation as the Everett Silvertips edged the host Portland Winterhawks 2-1 on Sunday in Western Hockey League action.

Brian King opened the scoring for the Silvertips (6-4-1) at 17:44 of the first period.

Keegan Iverson responded in the opening minute of the third for the Winterhawks (7-7-0), who had their five-game win streak halted.

Everett's Carter Hart stopped 23 shots for the win as Adin Hill turned aside 28-of-30 shots for Portland.

The Silvertips went 0 for 2 on the power play while the Winterhawks failed to score on four chances with the man advantage.

HITMEN 4 THUNDERBIRDS 3

CALGARY — Jackson Houck scored the winning goal at 19:56 of the third period as the Hitmen erased a two-goal deficit to beat Seattle.

Mark Kastelic, Radel Fazleev and Travis Sanheim also scored for Calgary (8-7-1), which got an 18-save outing from Cody Porter.

Nolan Volcan, Brandon Schuldhaus and Donavan Neuls supplied the offence for the Thunderbirds (9-3-1), who led 3-1 heading into the third period. Taz Burman turned away 19 shots in a losing cause.

CHIEFS 3 OIL KINGS 1

EDMONTON — Kailer Yamamoto struck twice and Tyson Verhelst made 35 saves as Spokane downed the Oil Kings.

The Chiefs (7-7-2) got their other goal from Riley Whittingham.

Dario Meyer kept Edmonton (4-9-3) from getting blanked. Patrick Dea stopped 25-of-27 shots in defeat.

AMERICANS 4 GIANTS 1

VANCOUVER — Parker Bowles had two goals and an assist and Nicholas Sanders made 19 saves as Tri-City toppled the Giants.

Jordan Toppin scored once and set up two more for the Americans (6-8-1) while Vladislav Lukin tacked on a goal and an assist.

Elliott Peterson scored for Vancouver (4-8-3), which got 23 saves out of Payton Lee.

ROYALS 5 BLADES 1

SASKATOON — Vladimir Bobylev had a pair of goals and Coleman Vollrath made 26 saves as Victoria toppled the Blades.

Ryan Peckford, Dante Hannoun and Logan Fisher also scored for the Royals (10-5-1) and Joe Hicketts chipped in with three assists.

Connor Gay supplied the offence for Saskatoon (7-5-3) while Nik Amundrud stopped 20-of-25 shots in defeat.

WHEAT KINGS 3 WARRIORS 2

MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Nolan Patrick and Jayce Hawryluk each had a goal and an assist as Brandon held on to beat the Warriors.

John Quenneville also scored for the Wheat Kings (11-3-2) while Logan Thompson made 25 saves for the win.

Brayden Point and Dryden Hunt found the back of the net for Moose Jaw (8-4-3). Zach Sawchenko stopped 28-of-31 shots in defeat.
