Sabres goalie Lehner out 6-10 weeks with ankle sprain

Buffalo Sabres goalie Robin Lehner will miss 6-10 weeks with a high-ankle sprain, coach Dan Bylsma said Sunday.

"We were waiting for the MRI and waiting for a prognosis but you know with the symptoms and so forth, you had an idea what the injury was," Bylsma said in video posted by the Sabres website. "It's not a complete surprise to get the results and to have that be the time frame."

Lehner left a 3-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators 7:30 into the second period Thursday. He was hunched over after he made a save against Senators forward Mark Stone and appeared to favor his left leg. Lehner skated off the ice but was helped to the bench by a trainer.

Lehner was traded to Buffalo by Ottawa on June 26. He was playing his first game since sustaining a concussion on Feb. 16 in a game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Sabres captain Brian Gionta (lower body) practiced Sunday and could play Monday against the Columbus Blue Jackets at First Niagara Center.

"I felt great, today was a good day," Gionta told the Sabres website. "I progressed well so it felt good to get out there with the guys and we’ll see how things respond [Monday]."
