The Toronto Maple Leafs signed defenseman Matt Hunwick to a two-year contract on Wednesday, according to TSN. Hunwick's contract reportedly carries a $1.2 million salary-cap charge.

Hunwick had 11 points and was a plus-17 in 55 games with the New York Rangers last season. He was supposed to be the seventh defensemen, but the Rangers had injuries on defense, allowing Hunwick to play more than expected.

Hunwick has 78 points in 347 games with the Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche and New York Rangers. He has six points in 20 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He didn't have a point in six playoff games last season with the Rangers.

The Maple Leafs also have defensemen Dion Phaneuf, Jake Gardiner, Morgan Rielly, Stephane Robidas, Roman Polak and Tim Erixon under contract for the 2015-16 season. Martin Marincin is a restricted free agent.
