Oilers get goalie Talbot from Rangers for three picks

SUNRISE, Fla. -- The Edmonton Oilers acquired goaltender Cam Talbot and a seventh-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft from the New York Rangers on Saturday for three picks.

"I feel like I've put myself in a pretty good position," Talbot told the Oilers website. "I feel good physically and mentally where I can come in and play well. It's going to be a battle between Ben [Scrivens] and I, and I'm ready for the opportunity to compete."

The Rangers received picks Nos. 57, 79 and 184 in the 2015 draft. The Oilers got the No. 209 pick from New York.

"Cam has worked hard throughout his whole career and has pushed it," Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. " ... We believe that we’ve got a goaltender that will continue to improve, and it’s our job to make sure we help him do that."

The Oilers had been in the market for a goaltender because of uncertainty at the position. Talbot was 21-9-4 with a .926 save percentage and 2.21 goals-against average in 36 games this season, including an 8-3-1 record with a .946 save percentage and 1.66 GAA in March, when he was filling in for Henrik Lundqvist, who was out with a vascular injury in his neck.

"I knew Edmonton was one of the most interested parties in the negotiations, so I had a pretty good feeling it would be Edmonton," Talbot said. "I'm very excited for the opportunity to come in and hopefully play a few more games this year. It's going to be a lot of fun to battle with that."

Talbot is 33-15-5 with a .931 save percentage and 2.00 GAA in 57 NHL games. He became Lundqvist's full-time backup early in the 2013-14 season.

"Playing behind a guy like [Henrik] for a couple of years, you just get to learn a few things and maybe pick up a thing here or there, but no matter how well you play, when you’re playing behind one of the best in the world it’s hard to advance," Talbot said.

After the draft, the Rangers acquired goaltender Antti Raanta from the Chicago Blackhawks for minor-league forward Ryan Haggerty to replace Talbot.
