Canucks want to trade Lack or Markstrom: report

Goaltender Ryan Miller will remain with the Vancouver Canucks next season, but either Eddie Lack or Jacob Markstrom likely will not.

Canucks general manager Jim Benning on Wednesday said he is looking to trade Lack or Markstrom.

"I want to keep an older experienced goalie and Ryan is that guy," Benning said in an interview with TSN 1040 Radio, according to the Vancouver Sun. "Then we are going to decide on either Lack or Markstrom. I don't feel comfortable going into the season with two young goalies. Ryan for sure will be back."

Miller, 34, played 45 games and was 18-13-4 with a 2.53 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage in his first season with Vancouver after signing as a free agent. He missed seven weeks with a knee injury before returning in the regular-season finale.

Lack, 27, was 18-13-14 with a 2.45 GAA and a .921 save percentage and started majority of the games in Miller's absence. Markstrom, 25, played in three games with the Canucks, and helped the Utica Comets, their American Hockey League affiliate, reach the Calder Cup Finals. He was 22-7-2 during the AHL regular season and 12-11 in the playoffs.

"[Markstrom] is ready to be an NHL goalie now," Benning said. "He worked with [Canucks goaltending consultant] Dan Cloutier all year and Dan helped him tighten up his game, and of the 11 or 12 [playoff] games they won, I think nine of them went to overtime. They were all close games and [Markstrom] was under the gun every game to be good and he was good."

The Canucks finished second in the Pacific Division this season and were defeated by the Calgary Flames in six games in the Western Conference First Round. Lack started the first four games of the series before Miller started the last two.
