Flyers' Luke Schenn sustains upper-body injury

PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Luke Schenn left the game Saturday after sustaining an upper-body injury when he was hit into the end boards by Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon with 52.4 seconds remaining in the first period. He did not return.

Schenn was skating back into the Philadelphia zone to retrieve a puck when MacKinnon pushed him from behind. Schenn appeared to hit his left shoulder and head into the boards.

MacKinnon was assessed a five-minute major for boarding.

The Flyers did not have an update on Schenn following the game.

If Schenn has to miss any extended time, he would be the fourth Flyers defenseman to sustain a significant injury this season. Braydon Coburn returned to the lineup Saturday for the first time since the sustaining a lower-body injury in the season opener, and Andrew MacDonald has been out since sustaining a lower-body injury Oct. 22 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Top defenseman Kimmo Timonen has been out all season since being diagnosed with blood clots in August.

The Flyers also announced top defense prospect Shayne Gostisbehere would have surgery Nov. 13 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. He was injured Nov. 7 while playing with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Flyers' American Hockey League affiliate. He played two games with the Flyers earlier this season.
