Defenseman Michael Kostka was recalled Friday by the New York Rangers from Hartford of the American Hockey League, the Rangers announced.

New York needed a defenseman after Dan Boyle sustained a broken hand Thursday against the St. Louis Blues. The injury is expected to keep Boyle out 4-6 weeks.

Kostka, 28, had four goals and 11 points in 28 games last season with the Chicago Blackhawks and Tampa Bay Lightning. He also had two assists in three Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Lightning.

He had one assist, a plus-2 rating and eight shots on goal in four preseason games with the Rangers.
