Joe Nieuwendyk has been hired by the Carolina Hurricanes as a professional scout and adviser, the team announced Wednesday.

Nieuwendyk was general manager of the Dallas Stars from 2009 to 2013, and prior to that held advisory roles with the Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs.

"Joe brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our organization," Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis said. "He will be based in Dallas and will be a major asset to the Hurricanes in player evaluations."

As a player, Nieuwendyk won the Stanley Cup three times and is 22nd on the all-time list with 564 goals. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011.
