Flyers re-sign goalie Emery to one-year contract

The Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday re-signed goaltender Ray Emery to a one-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed, though it is believed Emery will make less than he did last season.

"You always want to earn as much as you can, but I'm happy to be staying in the same spot," Emery said. "It was a real comfortable situation for me and I'm just glad that I get to stay somewhere I'm comfortable."

Emery, 31, began his second stint with the Flyers last season and went 9-12-2 in 28 games with a 2.96 goals-against average and .903 save percentage as the backup to Steve Mason.

"I thought it was a good relationship, I thought that as far as the whole team went it was a good situation chemistry-wise," Emery said.

Emery started the first three games of their Eastern Conference First Round series against the New York Rangers with Mason injured and went 1-2 with a 3.49 GAA and .888 save percentage.

"I wasn't happy with my year personally last year, but sometimes it's not about personal success as much as it is having team success," Emery said. "I thought I fit in well with a new team. So I'm looking forward to going back into a familiar situation and I think I'll do better, being my second year, being more comfortable in that situation."

Emery, who was 17-1-0 with a 1.94 GAA and .922 save percentage in 2012-13 and was a member of the Chicago Blackhawks' Stanley Cup championship team, has a career record of 135-75-21 with a 2.66 GAA and .908 save percentage in 256 regular-season games for the Ottawa Senators, Anaheim Ducks, Blackhawks and Flyers.

"It's a supporting role, it's a role that I'm used to," Emery said. "If [Mason] has a year like he did last year and I can contribute a little bit better in the games I get in, then I'll be happy with the season."

The Flyers also signed goaltender Rob Zepp to a one-year, two-way contract. Zepp, 32, spent the past seven seasons in Germany, playing for the Berlin Polar Bears of the German Ice Hockey League.
