Penguins recall Vokoun from AHL conditioning stint

Goaltender Tomas Vokoun was recalled by the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday following a conditioning assignment with its American Hockey League affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Vokoun played two games over the weekend, going 1-1-0 with a 2.41 goals-against average and .891 save percentage.

He sat out the entire season after being diagnosed with a blood clot in his pelvis during training camp.

The 37-year-old was expected to serve as Marc-Andre Fleury's backup this season; in his absence rookie Jeff Zatkoff filled the role, going 12-6-2 with a 2.61 GAA and .912 save percentage in 20 games.

As Fleury's backup last season Vokoun went 13-4-3 in 20 regular-season games, and then replaced Fleury during the Penguins' first-round Stanley Cup Playoff series against the New York Islanders. In 11 playoff games he went 6-5 with a 2.01 GAA and .933 save percentage.
