AHL announces First and Second All-Star teams

The American Hockey League on Thursday announced the 2013-14 AHL First and Second All-Star Teams as voted by AHL coaches, players and media in each of the league's 30 member cities. Each player will receive a custom-designed crystal award in recognition of his selection.

2013-14 AHL First All-Star Team

Jake Allen, Goaltender (Chicago Wolves)

A second-round pick (No. 34) of the St. Louis Blues in the 2008 NHL Draft, Allen went 30-16-3 in 49 games and led the AHL in wins, shutouts (six) and minutes (2,958). Allen, 23, also ranked second in goals-against average (2.09) and save percentage (.926), and represented the Wolves at the 2014 AHL All-Star Classic.

TJ Brennan, Defenseman (Toronto Marlies)

Brennan's 22 goals are the most by a defenseman in the AHL since 2002-03 and his 66 points were second on the North Division champion Marlies. Originally a second-round pick (No. 31) of the Buffalo Sabres in 2008, Brennan began the season with 10 points, including two hat tricks, in his first three games. He leads AHL defensemen with 12 power-play goals and four game-winning goals, and is first overall with 249 shots on goal.

Adam Clendening, Defenseman (Rockford IceHogs)

Clendening became the first AHL defenseman to make a postseason All-Star team in each of his first two seasons (he was a second-team all-star selection in 2012-13) since Dan Boyle in 1999 and 2000. He's second among defensemen with 44 assists and 56 points, and leads the IceHogs in scoring while appearing in 70 of 71 games. Clendening was a second-round choice (No. 36) by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2011.

Mike Hoffman, Left Wing (Binghamton Senators)

Currently skating for the Ottawa Senators, Hoffman rebounded after missing half of last season due to injury. He was three points off the AHL scoring lead at the time of his Feb. 23 recall, and is still tied for fourth in goals (30) and tied for sixth in points (67) in 51 games with Binghamton. Hoffman had 19 multipoint games for Binghamton, including a four-goal game on Jan. 29 at Worcester, and has two goals and two assists in 22 games with Ottawa.

Travis Morin, Center (Texas Stars)

Morin currently leads the AHL with 81 points (31 goals, 50 assists) in 62 games for Texas, nearly doubling his 44-point output from a season ago. The CCM/AHL Player of the Month in October and January, Morin began the season on a 10-game scoring streak and went without a point in consecutive games only four times all year. He has also appeared in four games with the Dallas Stars.

Colton Sceviour, Right Wing (Texas Stars)

Sceviour has career highs of 32 goals and 63 points for Texas, to go with 13 power-play goals and six-game winning goals, and is the franchise's all-time leader in games played (348). In 24 NHL games with Dallas, Sceviour has seven goals and four assists.

2013-14 AHL Second All-Star Team

Petr Mrazek, Goaltender (Grand Rapids Griffins)

Mrazek earned a second-team selection after leading Grand Rapids to a Calder Cup championship as a rookie in 2012-13. He's 22-7-1 in 30 games and leads the AHL in GAA (2.03) and save percentage (.927). Mrazek also played eight NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings, going 1-4-0 with a 2.01 GAA and .916 save percentage.

Adam Almquist, Defenseman (Grand Rapids Griffins)

Almquist leads all AHL defensemen with 48 assists and ranks third with 52 points in 69 games, in his second season in North American. Led by Almquist's play at both ends, the Griffins are allowing a Western Conference-low 2.43 goals per game. He was drafted by the Red Wings in the seventh round (No. 210) in 2009, and had one goal in two NHL games this season.

Brad Hunt, Defenseman (Oklahoma City Barons)

Hunt leads all Barons players with 49 points (11 goals, 38 assists) in 62 games, and has 31 points and a plus-9 rating in his past 28 games. Hunt, who signed his first NHL contract with the Edmonton Oilers in the offseason, made his debut with them on Jan. 3 and appeared in three games.

Zach Boychuk, Left Wing (Charlotte Checkers)

Boychuk leads the AHL with 35 goals and is second with 70 points in 65 games for the Checkers. The 14th pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2008 NHL Draft, Boychuk's 17 power-play goals are first in the AHL, and he has one goal and three assists in 10 NHL games this season with Carolina.

Andy Miele, Center (Portland Pirates)

Miele is tied for third in the league in scoring with career highs of 27 goals, 42 assists and 69 points for Portland. The Hobey Baker Award winner in 2011 as a senior at Miami University, Miele has nine power-play goals, a shorthanded goal and two-game winners for the Pirates. He also has two assists in seven games with the Phoenix Coyotes this season.

Spencer Abbott, Right Wing (Toronto Marlies)

Abbott began his second professional season with a point in 13 consecutive games. He leads the AHL with 52 assists and is tied for third with 69 points in 64 games. Signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2012 after four seasons at the University of Maine, Abbott made his NHL debut on Oct. 5.
