Wild goalie Backstrom likely out for season

Minnesota Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher said Tuesday goaltender Niklas Backstrom will be shut down for the foreseeable future, most likely the rest of the season.

Backstrom has lower-body injuries and hasn't played since a relief appearance Jan. 30. His last start came Jan. 11.

The Wild on Tuesday acquired goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov from the Edmonton Oilers in a trade for a fourth-round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft.

Bryzgalov figures to team with rookie Darcy Kuemper, who has won his past five starts and is 11-3-2, stabilizing the position in the absence of Backstrom and Josh Harding, who hasn't played since Dec. 31.
