Dizziness forces Wings' Gustavsson to leave game

Detroit Red Wings starting goalie Jonas Gustavsson did not take the net for the second period against the Vancouver Canucks on Monday due to dizziness.

Gustavsson stopped all eight shots he faced in the first period. He was replaced by Jimmy Howard, who made 16 saves to complete a 2-0 shutout.

It was Detroit's first combined shutout since Oct. 27, 2001, when Manny Legace and Dominik Hasek defeated the Nashville Predators 1-0.

"Sometimes it's a crap shoot. You never really know until you get in there," Howard said. "Some nights like that can go your way and then other nights it can go in the complete opposite direction. Each time is different, and you just have to be ready to the best of your capabilities."

Howard saved a penalty shot by David Booth 4:41 into the second period and faced three shots in the third.

Gustavsson missed time earlier this season with a groin injury. He was on a five-game winning streak before losing his past two starts (5-1-1).
