Gibson makes 32 saves as Marlies down Checkers 3-1

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Christopher Gibson turned away 32 shots as the Toronto Marlies downed the host Charlotte Checkers 3-1 on Friday in American Hockey League action.

Tyler Biggs, Spencer Abbott and Brad Ross supplied the scoring for the Marlies (15-9-2) while David Broll tacked on two assists.

Zach Boychuk had the lone goal for the Checkers (12-15-1), who had their four-game win streak halted.

Charlotte put 15 shots on Gibson in the opening period, however the game remained scoreless as the rookie goaltender stopped each one that came his way.

Biggs opened the scoring at 17:03 of the second period and Abbott made it 2-0 for Toronto 43 seconds later.

Ross extended the Marlies lead to three goals eight minutes into the third period.

Boychuk ruined Gibson's shutout bid with a power-play goal at 13:09.

The Marlies went 0 for 4 on the power play while the Checkers scored once on six chances with the man advantage.
