Detroit Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader was helped from the ice late in the first period of the game Saturday against the Pittsburgh Penguins after a hit by defenseman Deryk Engelland. He did not return to the game, which the Penguins won 4-1.
Abdelkader was skating for a loose puck at center ice when he and Engelland collided near the red line. Engelland's shoulder appeared to strike Abdelkader's chin. Daniel Alfredsson and a team trainer helped Abdelkader from the ice at Joe Louis Arena with 29.3 seconds remaining in the period.
Engelland was given a match penalty, putting Detroit on a five-minute power play. Chuck Kobasew served the five minutes.
Abdelkader played 6:01 on seven shifts before he was injured.
