WHL Roundup: Winterhawks' streak continues at expense of Silvertips' streak

EVERETT, Wash. - The Portland Winterhawks' point streak was mightier than the Everett Silvertips' win streak.

Oliver Bjorkstrand scored the eventual winner and added two assists as Portland downed Everett 6-3 on Tuesday in Western Hockey League action.

The Winterhawks are 5-0-1 in their last six games. The win ends the Silvertips' five-game win streak.

Captain Taylor Leier, Chase De Leo and Garrett Haar all had a goal and an assist for Portland (21-5-3), while Alex Schoenborn and Derrick Pouliot also scored.

Goaltender Brendan Burke made 35 saves for the win.

Joshua Winquist struck twice for the Silvertips (20-5-4), with Ivan Nikolishin adding a goal as well. Austin Lotz started in net for Everett, stopping 28 of 33 shots in 48:20 of work. He was pulled after De Leo's power-play goal.

Daniel Cotton made three saves on four shots in relief.

Portland went 1 for 4 on the power play, while Everett was 1 for 5 with the man advantage.

HITMEN 5 REBELS 2

CALGARY — The Hitmen scored five unanswered goals to storm past Red Deer for a 5-2 victory.

Pavel Padakin had a power-play goal as part of the five-goal outburst for Calgary (16-7-4). Chase Lang, Linden Penner, Jake Virtanen and Radel Fazleev rounded out the attack for the Hitmen. Chris Driedger made 16 saves for the win.

Rhyse Dieno and Dominik Volek gave the Rebels (13-14-2) a 2-0 lead in the first 1:07 of play. Patrik Bartosak started in net for Red Deer, turning aside 27 of 31 shots. He was replaced by Taz Burman, who stopped eight of nine shots.

It was an undisciplined game with Calgary taking 48 minutes of penalties. The Rebels spent 36 minutes in the box.

ROCKETS 4 GIANTS 3 (OT)

KELOWNA, B.C. — Damon Severson scored in overtime as the Rockets slipped past Vancouver 4-3.

Tyson Baillie scored and added two assists for Kelowna (20-3-2), while Ryan Olsen and Colton Heffley chipped in as well. Jordon Cooke made 29 saves for the win.

Cain Franson had a pair of goals for the Giants (12-11-7) and Alec Baer also scored. Jared Rathjen stopped 28 shots.

AMERICANS 3 BLADES 1

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Connor Rankin and Taylor Vickerman both had power-play goals as Tri-City topped Saskatoon 3-1.

Beau McCue's goal with a second left in the first period gave the Americans (16-12-3) a 3-0 lead. Eric Comrie made 25 saves.

Logan Harland was the lone scorer for the Blades (10-18-3). Alex Moodie stopped six of eight shots he faced before being pulled in favour of Troy Trombley. Trombley turned aside 17 of 18 shots in 40:23 of work.

ROYALS 3 ICE 0

VICTORIA — Coleman Vollrath made 25 saves to earn the shutout as the Royals blanked Kootenay 3-0.

Brandon Magee, Logan Nelson and Austin Carroll supplied the offence for Victoria (19-11-1).

Wyatt Hoflin stopped 16 shots for the Ice (15-13-2).
