St. John's IceCaps grab 3-0 first period lead and beat Portland 4-2

PORTLAND, Maine - The St. John's IceCaps grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first period and went on to defeat the Portland Pirates 4-2 in American Hockey League action on Friday.

J.C. Lipon opened the scoring for St. John's (5-5-1), Jason Jaffray followed with a shorthanded goal and Zach Redmon added a power-play goal at 19:52.

Brendan Shinnimin got Portland (2-5-1) back in the game in the second period with his first two goals of the season, before Eric O'Dell put the IceCaps in front by two at 17:01 of the second period.

Eddie Pasquale made 39 saves for St. John's. Mark Visentin stopped 9 of 12 shots in the opening period for Portland, before he was replaced by Louie Domingue, who turned back 15 of 16 shots the rest of the way.
