Varlamov can travel with Avalanche after bond set

A Denver judge Thursday set a bond of $5,000 for Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov.

Varlamov was arrested Wednesday on second-degree kidnapping and third-degree assault charges. The kidnapping charge is a Class 4 felony, punishable by two to six years in prison under Colorado statutes; the assault charge is a misdemeanor. Varlamov turned himself in to Denver Police Department detectives Wednesday.

Because of the assault charge, Varlamov was required to spend the night in jail until he could stand before a judge Thursday morning, when bond was set. Also at the hearing Thursday, Varlamov was granted permission to travel by the court, but a restraining order was imposed.

Varlamov can travel with the team to Dallas, where the Avalanche will play the Dallas Stars on Friday.

"We're going to take it one day at a time, like we've been doing all year long," Avalanche coach Patrick Roy told reporters in Colorado on Thursday. "Obviously it's important that for me as a coach I keep my focus on our team and we keep our focus there. At the same time, we let the law decide what's going to be."

In a statement sent to ESPN.com on Thursday, Varlamov's agent, Paul Theofanous, said, "My client Semyon Varlamov is completely innocent of all of these charges."

Wednesday, an NHL spokesman said, "The League is aware of the situation involving Semyon Varlamov. We will not comment unless or until we have a fuller understanding of all of the facts and circumstances related to the legal charges that have been filed."

The Avalanche said in a statement Wednesday the team "is aware of the allegations concerning Semyon Varlamov. At this time, and until the conclusion of this investigation, the Avalanche organization will have no further comment on this situation."

Varlamov, 25, is 7-1-0 as the starting goalie for the Avalanche this season, his third with the team.
