The New York Islanders on Wednesday signed veteran defenseman Radek Martinek to a one-year contract.
Martinek, 37, has played 10 of his 11 NHL seasons with the Islanders after being an eighth-round pick (No. 228) in the 1999 NHL Draft.
The signing comes on the heels of the team losing defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky to a concussion sustained in a loss Saturday to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Martinek has career totals of 25 goals and 107 points in 473 games with the Islanders and Columbus Blue Jackets.
