Rookie Zemgus Girgensons left the Buffalo Sabres' game against the New York Islanders on Tuesday night at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum after being hit in the face by a puck late in the first period.

The Sabres announced during the second period that Girgensons would not return.

Buffalo defenseman Tyler Myers' shot from the right point appeared to catch Girgensons on the left side of his face as he battled for position in front of the net. Play was stopped and Girgensons was holding a towel to his face as he skated off the ice with members of the Sabres' training staff.

Girgensons, a 19-year-old who was the 14th player taken in the 2012 NHL Draft, has one assist in seven games this season.
