Daily Primer Oct. 14: Red Wings back in Boston

The Detroit Red Wings went nearly 23 months between visits to Boston's TD Garden. Nine days later, they're back again.

The Red Wings lost 4-1 to the Boston Bruins on the first Saturday night of the new season. They're back at TD Garden on Monday for a Columbus Day matinee, one of three games on the NHL schedule. The Bruins are back home after a 3-1 road win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday afternoon, a game that ended a few hours before the Red Wings beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 in Detroit.

Here's a look at Monday's action:

Detroit Red Wings at Boston Bruins -- These teams, now rivals in the Atlantic Division, are playing for the second of four times this season; they met just seven times from 2005-13 while the Red Wings were in the Western Conference and Boston was in the East. Detroit's power play comes in having finally found the back of the net; the Red Wings scored their first three extra-man goals of the season against the Flyers. Tuukka Rask has played all four games for the Bruins this season and allowed one goal in each; he's 3-1-0, with the only loss a 2-0 defeat to the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday in which the second goal went into an empty net.

Edmonton Oilers at Washington Capitals -- One slumping team will leave Verizon Center with a victory after these two one-win teams get together. The Oilers (1-3-1) come to Washington after a 6-5 overtime loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night in the opener of a six-game road trip. Edmonton had four one-goal leads, including a 5-4 advantage in the final minute, but couldn't hold on and lost in OT. Washington (1-4-0) has dropped four of its five games and was routed 5-1 at home by Colorado on Saturday night. Coach Adam Oates cancelled practice on Sunday, opting for a team meeting and video session in hopes of finding a way to end a three-game losing streak.

Minnesota Wild at Buffalo Sabres -- Jason Pominville returns to First Niagara Center in a visiting uniform for the first time since the Sabres sent him to Minnesota at the trade deadline in April. He'll be there for a while longer after signing a five-year contract extension last week. The Wild are coming off back-to-back victories against the Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars at the end of a season-opening five-game homestand. This will be their first road game; the second comes Tuesday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Buffalo has managed one point (an overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Oct. 8) in six games. The Sabres' biggest problem has been putting the puck in the net, something they've done only six times. Buffalo will again be without defenseman Patrick Kaleta, who will have an in-person hearing with the NHL on Tuesday for a hit during a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets last Thursday.
