James Neal left the Pittsburgh Penguins' season-opener against the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night in the first period with an injury. He saw 3:49 of ice time in the opening period before heading to the dressing room and was not on the bench for the second period. The team said he will not return.

Beau Bennett took Neal's place on a line with Jussi Jokinen and Evgeni Malkin. The Penguins won the game 3-0.

Neal was questionable entering the game after leaving practice early on Wednesday with what the team called an upper-body injury. He did not take part in the morning skate Thursday.
