Plenty of new faces on the ice as Senators, Flames test rosters in pre-season

SASKATOON - The Ottawa Senators defeated the Calgary Flames 4-2 in a pre-season game Monday as both teams road tested new recruits and acquisitions.

The enthusiastic Saskatoon fans arrived decked out in the jerseys of their favourite stars like former Flames captain Jerome Iginla and Sens star Jason Spezza, but that calibre of veteran was nowhere to be seen.

Instead, the game featured young players working for a roster spot.

Buddy Robinson scored for the Senators midway through the first period, putting up his second goal in as many nights.

This was followed up by a second-period Senators goal by Cory Conacher, assisted by Stephane Da Costa and David Dziurzynski.

Four separate fights broke out in the second period. Senators bruiser Jim O'Brien dished out a particularly bad beating on Calgary forward Ben Hanowski, who was taken off the ice bleeding.

Calgary's David Jones put up an unassisted goal to the top corner in the third, and Corban Knight scored another late in the period.

But Ottawa answered with two goals by Mike Hoffman and Clarke MacArthur, putting the game away.

Flames goalie Reto Berra made an impression with 31 saves. Calgary is under pressure to find a goalie duo after longtime starter Miikka Kiprusoff announced his retirement last week.
