The Carolina Hurricanes announced Sunday that executive vice president and assistant general manager Jason Karmanos has been relieved of his duties with the team. Karmanos had served as Carolina's assistant general manager for 15 years.

Karmanos' duties will be assumed by vice president of hockey operations Ron Francis and video scout/hockey operations assistant Darren Yorke.

The Carolina Hurricanes open the 2013-14 season on Oct. 4 at PNC Arena against the Detroit Red Wings.

"This is a family matter," Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos said. "I have no further comment at this time."
