Report: Giroux won't attend Canada Olympic camp

Philadelphia Flyers forward Claude Giroux will not attend Canada's Olympic orientation camp this weekend, TSN reports.

Giroux was sidelined for 5-6 weeks after needing surgery on his right index finger following an accident while playing golf Aug. 15.

The report said Canada does not plan to invite a forward to take Giroux's place. Camp begins Sunday in Calgary.

There will be no on-ice activity at the camp, due in part to insurance concerns for the players, Canada executive director Steve Yzerman told The Canadian Press. He said the camp will be used to provide information about the 2014 Sochi Olympics and build team chemistry.

Giroux was injured playing golf in Ottawa and surgery to repair tendons was performed at the Ottawa Civic Hospital.

"It was just a freak thing," Giroux told the (Philadelphia) Daily News afterward. "I was taking a swing and my club hit a little behind the ball. The shaft of the club shattered, but my hand kept going on the swing and the shattered part went right into my finger."

The Flyers open training camp Sept. 12 and start the regular season against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Oct. 2. Giroux, who sustained a neck injury playing in Germany during the lockout, after having offseason surgery to repair ligaments in each wrist, has missed five NHL games since becoming a regular during the 2009-10 season.

Giroux, 25, was one of 25 forwards invited to participate in Canada's pre-Olympic camp, to take place Aug. 25-28. The forward had 13 goals and 48 points in 48 games last season. In 2011-12, he was third in the NHL in scoring with 93 points.
