Report: Smith, Red Wings reach deal

TSN reported Monday the Detroit Red Wings avoided salary arbitration with restricted free-agent defenseman Brendan Smith, as the sides agreed to a two-year, $2.525 million contract. According to the report, Smith will make $1.25 million in 2013-14 and $1.275 million in 2014-15.

Smith, 24, had eight points in 34 regular-season games while averaging 18:24 of ice time per game. He was better in the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs, leading the team's defensemen with five points in 14 games.

He had two goals, including the game-winner in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals against the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Red Wings' first pick (No. 27) in the 2007 NHL Draft, Smith made his NHL debut in 2011-12, and in parts of two seasons, has one goal and 15 points in 48 games.
