Ottawa Senators center Jason Spezza told reporters Monday he sustained a knee injury during his recovery from back surgery, which delayed his return to the lineup.

Spezza said he tore the meniscus in his knee while training but was able to work through it and return to the lineup for the final three games of the Senators' Eastern Conference Semifinal series against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Surgery will be needed to fix his knee, Spezza said, and said he'll have the procedure performed sometime in the next week. He estimated recovery time at 2-3 weeks.

The Senators were eliminated from the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Penguins in five games.
