ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Minnesota Wild announced Tuesday that left wing Dany Heatley will miss the rest of the season after undergoing successful shoulder surgery earlier in the day at the Cleveland Clinic.

Heatley initially injured the shoulder April 3 at the conclusion of the Wild's game against the San Jose Sharks. After the final buzzer, Heatley was cross-checked by Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic. Heatley got up and took a swipe at Vlasic with his stick before Vlasic swung back. The two tussled before Heatley was knocked awkwardly to the ice. He got up and immediately grabbed his left arm and headed for the dressing room.

It was initially believed that surgery may hasten the healing process and Heatley would be ready for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The team said Heatley should be ready for the start of the 2013-14 season.
