WHL Roundup: Brossoit stops 23 shots as Oil Kings record back-to-back shutouts

The Edmonton Oil Kings are a confident club no matter who they decide to toss in goal.

Laurent Brossoit stopped 23 shots as Edmonton beat the host Medicine Hat Tigers 6-0 on Saturday in Western Hockey League play.

Brossoit's fourth shutout of the season came just one night after Tristan Jarry blanked the Swift Current Broncos and, combined, the two goaltenders have nine shutouts. The Oil Kings also have a league-best 2.06 goals-against average.

Medicine Hat has dropped five-of-six meetings this season against Edmonton, scoring just seven goals in the process.

T.J. Foster and Michael St. Croix each had a goal and an assist for the Oil Kings (38-11-5), who extended their win streak to eight games, while Ashton Sautner, Henrik Samuelsson, Curtis Lazar and Trevor Cheek added single goals.

Martin Gernat chipped in three assists for Edmonton.

Cam Lanigan turned aside 36 shots in a losing cause for the Tigers (25-26-3), who are winless in three games.

Edmonton went 2 for 4 on the power play while Medicine Hat failed to score on five chances with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the WHL, it was: Prince Albert 2, Calgary 0; Saskatoon 4, Swift Current 1; Brandon 5, Regina 2; Kootenay 3, Lethbridge 0; Portland 4, Spokane 0; Victoria 2, Prince George 1 (SO); Kamloops 3, Everett 2 (SO); Kelowna 5, Vancouver 0 and Tri-City 4, Seattle 3 (OT).

At Medicine Hat, Alta., Sautner opened the scoring in the final minute of the first period for Edmonton.

Lazar made it 2-0 just over two minutes into the second period and Samuelsson and St. Croix added a goal apiece before the period was through to give the Oil Kings a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Foster and Cheek scored 47 seconds apart in the third period to round out Edmonton's scoring.

At Brandon, Ryan Pulock set up all five of his club's goals and Jayce Hawryluk scored twice as the Wheat Kings (19-31-4) ended their four-game winless streak by downing Regina (19-28-6).

At Cranbrook, B.C., Mackenzie Skapski stopped 23 shots and Levi Cable, Joey Leach and Brock Montgomery all scored as Kootenay (24-27-2) shut out Lethbridge (24-23-8) for its first win in three outings.

At Portland, Ore., Mac Carruth stopped 26 shots and Brendan Leipsic scored twice as the Winterhawks (43-7-3) handed Spokane (30-20-2) its fourth loss in a row.

At Prince George, B.C., Alex Gogolev scored in regulation and then added the shootout winner and Patrik Polivka stopped 38-of-39 shots as Victoria (28-19-4) halted its three-game winless streak by downing the Cougars (16-30-7).

At Everett, Wash., JC Lipon scored once in regulation and then added the shootout winner while Cole Cheveldave stopped 28 shots as Kamloops (35-15-5) slipped past the Silvertips (21-28-5), who are winless in four games.

At Kelowna, B.C., Myles Bell had two goals and an assist and Jordan Cooke made 22 saves as the Rockets (40-10-4) blanked Vancouver (13-40-0) for their 17th victory in their last 19 games.

At Kent, Wash., Justin Feser scored twice, including the winner 27 seconds into overtime, and Malte Stromwall and Parker Bowles each had a goal and an assist as Tri-City (31-19-3) downed the Thunderbirds (19-29-5) for its third win in a row.
