OHL Roundup: Mistele powers Plymouth Whalers past Windsor Spitfires 8-2

Matthew Mistele was responsible for half of the Plymouth Whalers scoring on Thursday.

Mistele scored twice and added two assists as Plymouth hammered the Windsor Spitfires 8-2 in Ontario Hockey League action.

Vincent Trochek also scored twice for the Whalers (24-14-8) with singles going to Cody Payne, Zach Lorentz, Mitchell Heard and Garrett Meurs.

Lorentz, traded to Plymouth from Windsor earlier this month, also added two assists for a three-point night.

Plymouth scored three times in the first period and exploded for five goals in the second to take control of the game and never look back.

Alex Aleardi and Kerby Rychel replied for the Spitfires (19-20-16).

Aleardi, acquired in exchange for Lorentz, also added an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to 11 consecutive games, currently the longest in the OHL. It was also Aleardi's 300th career game in the league.

Special teams went a long way in determining the outcome of the game.

The Whalers cashed in on two of four power-play opportunities whiles the Spitfires scored just once on six man advantages. Trochek's first goal of the game in the first period was the third short-handed goal the Spitfires have allowed in the last two games.

Elsewhere in the OHL it was: Barrie 2 Niagara 1 (OT); London 11 Ottawa 1 and Peterborough 3 Belleville 2 (SO).

At Windsor, Ont., Matt Mahalak made 25 saves to earn the win. Jaroslav Pavelka made 13 saves before being replaced by Jordan Dekort to start the second period. Dekort made 18 saves in a relief effort.

At St. Catharines, Ont., Ryan O'Connor's power-play goal 35 seconds into overtime lifted Barrie (31-14-2) over Niagara (23-20-4).

At Ottawa, Tyler Ferry, Josh Anderson, Max Domi and Seth Griffith all scored short-handed as London (36-8-3) crushed Ottawa (12-33-3).

Petes 3 Bulls 2 (SO)

At Peterborough, Ont., Nick Ritchie and Jonatan Tanus scored on dekes in the shootout to give the Petes (14-26-7) a comeback win over Belleville (26-13-6).
