One game into the 2012-13 season, the Stanley Cup champions have apparently lost a big piece to their puzzle.

TSN’s Bob McKenzie is reporting that Los Angeles Kings defenseman Matt Greene will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a back injury during Saturday’s 5-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks at the Staples Center.

The Kings made adjustments to their roster Monday night, as they recalled defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk from the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League. Greene, 29, was placed on the injured reserve list (retroactive to Jan. 19).

Greene, an alternate captain for Los Angeles, was entering his fifth season with the club. He has 11 goals, 52 assists and 531 penalty minutes in 462 NHL games between Edmonton and the Kings. He went 2-4-6 in 20 postseason contests in 2012, helping Los Angeles win its first Stanley Cup.

The Kings return to action Tuesday night at Colorado.
