OHL Roundup: Tanus scores shootout winner as Petes upset Rangers 3-2

The Peterborough Petes haven't had much to get excited about this season, but Jonatan Tanus made sure their new captain won his first game at the helm.

The Finnish rookie scored the only goal of the shootout Thursday as the Petes upset the Kitchener Rangers 3-2 in the Ontario Hockey League.

Derek Mathers, in his first game as the Petes captain after a series of trades sent a number of veterans packing, and Nick Czinder scored in regulation for Peterborough (12-24-5), which got 36 saves from Andrew D'Agostini.

Brent Pederson and Evan McEneny replied for Kitchener (22-13-6). Joel Vienneau made 32 saves in taking the loss.

Elsewhere in the OHL it was: Windsor 3, Brampton 0; Niagara 3, Owen Sound 2 (SO); Barrie 5, Mississauga 4 (SO).

At Peterborough, two of the Petes' first three shooters hit the post in the shootout, but neither team could connect through the first three rounds. Tanus then slid the puck through Vienneau's five-hole to give his team the edge.

With boos raining down from the crowd on Derek Schoenmakers, who had refused to report to the Petes after being traded to the club before Christmas, the overage player couldn't beat D'Agostini.

Mathers, who took of as captain after Slater Koekkoek was dealt by Peterborough on Wednesday, scored unassisted on a breakaway just 32 seconds into the game.

Czinder scored in his first game as with the Petes at 15:09 of the first to make it 2-0 after coming to the team in one of three trades which saw Peterborough deal away its three leading scorers ahead of Thursday's deadline.

The Petes held a 2-0 lead through the scoreless second period, but Pederson and McEneny scored in the third to send the game to overtime.

Spitfires 3, Battalion 0

At Windsor, Ont., Jaroslav Pavelka made 38 saves as the Spitfires (15-19-6) shut out Brampton (19-17-7).

At St. Catharines, Ont., Ben Hughes beat Jordan Binnington in the fifth round of the shootout as Niagara (23-16-3) got past Owen Sound (25-12-3).

At Barrie, Ont., Steven Beyers scored the only goal of the shootout as the Colts (27-12-1) edged Mississauga (20-15-4).
