OHL Roundup: Griffith scores overtime winner for Knights

Seth Griffith kept the London Knights rolling by staying hot himself.

Griffith scored twice, including the winner 3:13 into overtime, as the London Knights edged the visiting Kingston Frontenacs 6-5 on Sunday in Ontario Hockey League action.

Griffith now has five game-winning goals and 27 goals and 58 points in 36 games, which is good for third in OHL scoring.

The victory extends London's franchise-best win streak to 21 games, which is just four shy of the OHL record set by the 1983-84 Kitchener Rangers.

Ryan Rupert also scored twice for the Knights (29-5-2), who improved to 15-3-2 on home ice, while Chris Tierney had a goal and two assists.

Rupert, a 2012 selection of the Toronto Maple Leafs, has three goals and nine points in his last eight games while Tierney has two goals and seven points in his last five outings.

Josh Anderson scored twice as Bo Horvat and Jacob Jammes each had two assists to round out London's offence.

Sam Povorozniouk had a goal and an assist for the Frontenacs (17-15-2), who have dropped back-to-back games, and Cody Alcock, Samuel Schutt, Slater Doggett and Jean Dupuy each scored once.

Jake Patterson started in goal for the London but was replaced after allowing three goals on 19 shots through 23 minutes of action.

Kevin Bailie stopped 7 of 9 shots in the final 42 minutes of relief to pick up his 17th victory of the season while Colin Furlong turned away 42-of-48 shots in a losing cause for Kingston.

The Knights went 1 for 4 on the power play while the Frontenacs failed to score on either of their chances with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the OHL, it was: Brampton 4, Niagara 1; Sudbury 3, Mississauga 1; Barrie 4, Peterborough 1; Oshawa 4, Ottawa 3 and Sault Ste. Marie 4, Windsor 1.

At London, Ont., Tierney and Rupert scored less than two minutes apart to give the Knights a 2-0 lead eight minutes into the first period, but Alcock and Povorozniouk responded for Kingston to make it 2-2 after 20 minutes of play.

Dupuy gave the Frontenacs their first lead of the game at 3:23 of the second period before Anderson replied for London at 6:51.

Doggett made it 4-3 Kingston heading into the third period.

Schutt extended the Frontenacs' lead at 8:13 of the third, however their lead quickly dissolved as Griffith scored his first of the day and Rupert added his second at 15:04 to force overtime.

At Mississauga, Ont., Nathan Pancel scored the winner late in the second period and Joshua Leivo had a goal and an assist as Sudbury (14-16-6) downed the Steelheads (18-12-3) to earn at least one point in its fifth straight outing.

At Peterborough, Ont., Andreas Athanasiou, Zach Hall and Erik Bradford each had a goal and an assist and Alex Fotinos stopped 36 shots as Barrie (23-9-1) handed the Petes (8-23-4) their third loss in a row.

At Oshawa, Ont., Cole Cassels scored twice, including the winner at 14:06 of the third period, and Daniel Altshuller turned away 30-of-33 shots as the Generals (20-12-3) beat Ottawa (9-24-3) for their third straight win.
