Special teams went a long way in deciding the outcome of the game. The Spitfires scored three goals on nine power-play opportunities while the Spirit went 0 for 5 while playing with the man advantage.

Schoenmakers opened the scoring just under four minutes into the first period when he pounced on a rebound while standing in the slot and put a low back-hander behind Jake Paterson in the Saginaw net.

The Spitfires grabbed control of the same in the second, scoring the only two goals of the period by Ebert and Rychel, and outshooting the Sprit 20-5 in the process.

Windsor scored twice in all three periods while Saginaw could beat Pavelka just once in the first.

Paterson made 26 saves before being replaced by Nikita Serebryakov, who started the third period and made eight saves in a relief effort.
