Report: Staal turns down 10-year deal with Penguins

Jordan Staal apparently isn't interested in a long-term deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins -- at least not right now.

TSN's Bob McKenzie reports on Twitter that Staal has turned down a 10-year offer from the Penguins, indicating to the club that he doesn't plan on signing an extension now.

Staal scored 25 goals and added 25 assists for 50 points in 62 games with the Penguins in 2011-12. He also led Pittsburgh in playoff scoring with six goals and three assists in the Penguins' six-game loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Staal is entering the final season of a four-year deal that carries an average annual value of $4 million per year. Though he's just 23 years old, under the current collective bargaining agreement Staal would be eligible for unrestricted free agency at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Pittsburgh took Staal with the second pick in the 2006 NHL Draft, He has 120 goals and 128 assists in 431 career games, all with the Penguins. He helped Pittsburgh win a Stanley Cup in 2009.
