Wild re-sign Brodziak to three-year extension

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Following a big 2-0 victory against the Boston Bruins on Hockey Day Across America, the Minnesota Wild announced Sunday they re-signed veteran center Kyle Brodziak to a new three-year contract.

Brodziak, valuable on both ends of the rink and on special teams, has proven to be a huge commodity for Minnesota this season, especially as of late. A rock on the Wild's third line when the team is healthy, Brodziak has jumped all around this season, including on the first line in Sunday's win.

"I'm really happy, happy that it's done with and now I can concentrate more on playing hockey," Brodziak said.

Acquired three years ago in a trade with his hometown Edmonton Oilers, Brodziak has increased his offensive production each year he's been in Minnesota.

In his first season with the Wild, Brodziak established a new career high with 32 points only to better those numbers last season, scoring 16 goals and 21 assists.

This year, Brodziak is on pace to produce his best year yet, having scored 15 goals and 14 assists. He's also been incredibly durable in Minnesota, having played in all but two games since his arrival.

"My goal as a player is to keep getting better every year," said Brodziak. "I need to play a strong game, I don’t expect to score every night or contribute offensively every night, but if I’m playing strong defensively, strong on faceoffs, strong on the penalty kill, good aggressive on the forecheck and being strong on the puck, that’s when good things happen for me."

Brodziak was in the final year of a three-year deal and was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Financial terms of the deal were not officially disclosed, although the deal is believed to be worth between $2.5 and 3 million per season.
