The United States got off to a flying start at the World Junior Championships on Monday night.
Charlie Coyle scored a hat trick and
Kyle Rau had a pair of goals as the U.S. cruised to an 11-3 win against Denmark at Rexall Place in Edmonton.
With a 3-2 lead going into the second period, the U.S. (1-0) exploded for six goals to put the game out of reach. Mathias Bau-Hansen scored twice in the first period to keep the Danes close through 20 minutes.
Jason Zucker had a goal and three assists for the Americans, who have won gold and bronze medals in each of the past two IIHF World Junior Championships.
Coyle, Nick Bjustad, Zucker and winning goalie
Jack Campbell (20 saves) all played in last year's tournament, which was held in Buffalo, N.Y.
Thomas Spelling had the other goal for Denmark (0-1).
