While it was already anticipated that Penguins forward Sidney Crosby would be unavailable for the team's season opener Thursday night in Vancouver, the organization made it official today in their final round of roster moves.

In addition to re-assigning or waiving multiple players to bring the active roster down to 23 players, Pittsburgh also announced that Sidney Crosby will be placed on injured reserve to start the season.

In addition to Crosby, the Penguins also placed Dustin Jeffrey, Nick Petersen, Robert Bortuzzo and Boris Valabik on IR. Jason Williams, Alexandre Picard and Brian Strait are all headed to Pittsburgh's AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre, PA., while Joseph Morrow has been returned to his junior club in Portland.
