Jets' AHL affiliate reveals name, logos

The Winnipeg Jets' American Hockey League affiliate will be known as the St. John's IceCaps, the team announced Friday. The IceCaps also released the team's logos.

"I am so pleased to present the St. John's IceCaps and our new logo to fans, as we begin a new era of professional hockey in the province," President and Chief Executive Officer Danny Williams said in a press release. "The IceCaps is a name that I am confident hockey fans will support as it captures both our rich hockey history with a reference to the Caps, while at the same time capturing a natural element that is iconic for the province, ice. We wanted to ensure that, although the team is based in our capital city, the province as a whole can identify with it and embrace it as their own."

The logo features silver mountain caps behind "IceCaps" in bold, blue lettering. A map of Newfoundland and Labrador is featured on the icecap itself.

"The beauty of the ice-capped mountains, the outline of Newfoundland and Labrador displayed prominently and the jagged look of the mountains themselves are all indicative of the robust nature of our province," Glenn Stanford, AHL governor and team chief operating officer, said in the press release.

The press release also states that the province of Newfoundland and Labrador has a long history involving ice and mountains. In addition, the name pays tribute to a former Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association team known as the St. John's Caps.

The team relocated to St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, from Manitoba after the Jets relocated to the MTS Centre, which used to be host to the Manitoba Moose.

St. John's was last home to an AHL team from 1991-2005 before the St. John's Maple Leafs relocated to Toronto and became the Marlies.
