The Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday hired former Atlanta Thrashers coach John Anderson as an assistant to coach Dave Tippett.

"We are very pleased to have John join our coaching staff," said Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney. "John has experience as an NHL head coach in addition to having won several championships as a head coach in the American Hockey League. He sees the game from an offensive perspective and he will be counted on to help improve our offensive performance. Both he and Jim Playfair will be great additions to Dave Tippett's staff."

Anderson spent 2008-10 as coach in Atlanta, compiling a record of 70-75-19. The team missed the playoffs both seasons.

Prior to taking the NHL job, Anderson spent 11 years in the Thrashers organization as coach of the minor-league Chicago Wolves. He made the playoffs in 10 of his 11 seasons, and won two AHL titles (2002, 2008) and two IHL championships (1998, 2000).
