The Carolina Hurricanes have signed Anthony Stewart to a two-year, $1.8 million contract.

Stewart had 14 goals and 39 points for the Atlanta Thrashers last season, but was not extended a qualifying offer and became an unrestricted free agent. Carolina lost one of its top forwards from last season, Erik Cole, when he signed a four-year, $18 million contract Friday with Montreal.

"Anthony is a big man who plays a strong all-around game," general manager Jim Rutherford said in a statement. "He is coming off of a very good season with Atlanta and will be a strong addition to the Hurricanes' forward lines."

Stewart was originally a first-round pick by Florida in 2002. He has 18 goals and 51 points in 185 career NHL games. His brother, Chris, is one of the top power forwards in the League and moved from Colorado to St. Louis near the trade deadline last season.
