Sharks add defenseman White from Hurricanes

The San Jose Sharks completed a second deal Friday with the Carolina Hurricanes, acquiring defenseman Ian White for a second-round pick in the 2012 Entry Draft.

White had 2 goals and 16 points this season in 55 games for the Hurricanes and Calgary Flames. This is the third time White has been traded in the past 13 months.

"We think Ian is a great fit for our club, based on his abilities, style of play and his age," said Sharks GM Doug Wilson. "He's a great competitor who is responsible in his own end.  He moves the puck well, can play on the power play and we like his right-handed shot."

The Hurricanes felt they had younger players who could fill White's spot and wanted to give them the opportunity to do so.

"We've been very confident in Brett Carson's play with the Hurricanes this season, and that has given us the opportunity to make today's trade," said Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford. "This move gives us some flexibility going forward, and we thank Ian for his service to the Hurricanes this season."

Carolina had acquired White and Brett Sutter from Calgary in November for Anton Babchuk and Tom Kostopolous. The Flames acquired White as part of a seven-player deal that involved sending Dion Phanuef to Toronto in January 2010.

The Hurricanes picked up defenseman Derek Joslin from San Jose for future considerations earlier in the day. Joslin has 1 goal and 4 points in 17 games for the Sharks this season.
