Leach returns to Devils in trade with Sharks

Searching for depth on their blue line, the New Jersey Devils acquired defenseman Jay Leach and forward Steve Zalewski from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for forwards Michael Swift and Patrick Davis.

All four players were in the AHL at the time of the trade.

Leach, 31, was a member of the Devils' organization from 2008-10. He appeared in 24 NHL games during that time, notching an assist and 21 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-4 blueliner had a goal and 4 assists in 50 games for AHL Worcester this season.

Zalewski, 24, was San Jose's fifth-round pick at the 2004 Entry Draft. He had 4 goals and 17 assists in 50 games for Worcester this season. Zalewski has three NHL games on his resume, which were played with San Jose in 2009-10.

Swift was signed as an undrafted free agent by New Jersey in 2008. The Peterborough, Ont., native had 16 goals, 12 assists and 48 penalty minutes for their AHL affiliate in Albany this season.

Davis, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound left wing, had 3 goals and 10 assists in 40 games for Albany. He was New Jersey's fourth-round selection in the 2005 Entry Draft. Davis has 1 goal in nine career NHL games.
