Isles goalie injured in warmups

New York Islanders goaltender Kevin Poulin was helped off the ice during warmups prior to Tuesday night's game against Toronto at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum with what appeared to be an injured left knee.

Poulin, a 20-year-old rookie scheduled to start against the Leafs, seemed to catch his left skate in a rut in the crease and fell awkwardly. He skated gingerly off the ice and was helped down the tunnel toward the Islanders’ dressing room.

The Islanders announced that Poulin suffered an injured left knee and will undergo an MRI on Wednesday.

Mikko Koskinen, a 22-year-old who was to serve as Poulin's backup, made his NHL debut in his place. Koskinen was selected in the second round of the 2009 Entry Draft. The 6-foot-5 Finn looked shaky at the start, allowing goals on the first two shots he faced.

The Isles recalled goalie Joel Martin from their AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, on an emergency basis. He arrived during the second period and immediately dressed as Koskinen's backup.

The Isles are already without two other injured goaltenders – Rick DiPietro will be out for at least another month with facial fractures and a swollen knee, while Nathan Lawson is recuperating from a knee injury.

Koskinen is the fifth goaltender to play for the Islanders this season – Dwayne Roloson shared time with DiPietro before being traded to Tampa Bay on Jan. 1.
