The Washington Capitals have signed Alexander Semin to a one-year contract extension.

A team source said the deal is worth $6.7 million for the 26-year-old sniper who would have been an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Semin is second on the team with 18 goals and third with 35 points.

Semin established career highs with 40 goals and 84 points last season. He signed a one-year, $6 million extension in December 2009 for this season  -- his last as a restricted free agent.

The talented Russian forward hasn’t played since Jan. 8 because of a lower-body injury, but has begun skating again. Semin hasn’t scored a goal since Nov. 28.
