Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf left Tuesday night's game against the Ottawa Senators in the second period a cut on his left leg.

"He's got a cut on his leg and it was deep enough that they wanted to take him to the hospital to determine the extent of the injuries and that's the last I've heard," Leafs coach Ron Wilson said after the 3-2 loss. "Again, I'm not going to speculate. He probably won't be available for tomorrow (Wednesday at Washington) ... You can't replace Dion and what he brings to the team but other people have to step up in a leadership role and be vocal."

Sportsnet had reported that Phaneuf was taken out of the Air Canada Centre on a stretcher with a large bandage on his leg.

Phaneuf got tied up with Ottawa's Peter Regin along the side boards in his own zone at 6:11 of the second period and fell awkwardly to the ice. He had to be helped to the dressing room and did not return. Toronto lost the game 3-2.
